VAT Changes for Hair Dressing Salons

Hairdressing salons are being reminded of the VAT changes for ‘Chair Rentals’ enforced on October 1st 2012. If you are a salon owner renting chair space to self-employed hair stylists you are no longer VAT exempt. Chair rental is now taxable at the standard rate of VAT under measures announced by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

These changes reflect the additional services related to hairdressing that stylists receive other than just a licence to occupy their chair space. These services include;

  • A hairdressers assistant or cashier
  • The booking of appointments
  • The laundering of towels
  • The clearing of facilities
  • The making of refreshments

If you require any further information regarding this change please do not hesitate to contact us or take a look at this VAT Information Sheet.
